Pressure

How firm is deep tissue, really?

Firm enough that you notice it, and never firm enough to hurt. The strokes are slower and heavier than a Swedish hour, they stay on one or two areas, and the therapist checks in as the pressure builds rather than after.

That check-in is the whole mechanism. You hold the dial: say the word at any point and the pressure drops on the next stroke. Nobody at this studio has ever been annoyed by a client asking for less. If firm work is not what today calls for, a custom massage starts at $75 and can hold whatever mix you want.

Why it starts at an hour

Focused work on a tight shoulder plus a pass over the rest of the back does not fit in 45 minutes. Everything shorter turns into a rushed version of a different massage, so the shortest deep tissue booking on the menu is 60 minutes and the 90-minute one is what people book the second time.

What it feels like the next day

Like the day after a good workout, and only if the session went deep. Drink water, move normally, and do not book a heavy session the day before something you have to be sharp for.

Who Books It

Who actually books deep tissue in Staunton?

People whose job holds them in one shape. Desk work and driving are the two that come up most in the intake conversation, and the Shenandoah Valley adds a third — anyone whose commute is I-81 arrives with a stiff neck on the same side every time.

Massage is one of the approaches NCCIH lists among complementary options studied for chronic pain. On safety, NCCIH reports that the risk of harmful effects from massage therapy appears to be low, with rare reports of serious side effects such as a blood clot, nerve injury or bone fracture; some of those involved vigorous types of massage, deep tissue among them, or people already at increased risk of injury. That is what the health form on a first visit asks about. An hour on the table is comfort and general wellness, not a medical treatment.

  • Desk workers whose upper back has stopped letting go on its own
  • Anyone whose commute is an hour of I-81 in one position
  • Guests who have tried a Swedish hour and wanted more pressure
  • People coming back to exercise after a long gap

The Hour

What happens between walking in and getting on the table?

Please complete the health form sent by Square before your appointment and arrive 5–10 minutes early. At the studio, your therapist discusses your preferences and uses your completed form to adjust positioning and pressure.

Add-ons that suit this session

Cupping and gua sha both attach to a deep tissue hour and both leave temporary marks — round ones from the cups, redness from the scraper. Say so before the session if you have a wedding on Saturday. Heated stones are the other common addition, and they come free with every booking of two hours or longer.

A first deep tissue session, in order

  1. Please complete the health form sent by Square before your appointment and arrive 5–10 minutes early.
  2. You say what hurts and what you have already tried. This is the part that decides the hour.
  3. You are shown to a private room and draped throughout; only the area being worked is uncovered.
  4. The therapist opens with broader strokes, then goes into the target area as the tissue gives.
  5. Water, and a word about how often to come back if the area is an old one.

Cadence

How often should you come back?

Sooner than most people do, and then further apart. In a four-week trial for chronic neck pain summarised on NCCIH's science digest, 60-minute massages given multiple times per week were more effective than fewer or shorter sessions.

In practice that means a run of sessions when an area first flares up, then a standing monthly appointment. The prepaid packages price six sessions together and hold for a year.

Pressure is a dial you hold. Say the word and it lightens on the next stroke.
A therapist in a beige wrap tunic works along a client's back beside a sunlit sheer curtain, eucalyptus in a stone vase on the console.
Close-up from behind of a therapist's hands at a client's neck and shoulder, easing her hair aside above a draped linen wrap.
Seen from above and behind, a therapist presses along a client's lower back in a bright room of plants, baskets and stacked white towels.
Five glass cups sit in a row across a client's upper back while the therapist's hand rests on the last one, in a warm room with a wood-framed window.

Before You Book

Deep Tissue Massage in Staunton, VA: questions we get asked

Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt?

No. Deeper work can feel intense, in the way stretching a tight muscle feels intense, but it should never be painful. Tell your therapist at any point in the session and the pressure drops on the next stroke. Bracing against pressure tightens the muscle you came in to loosen.

How much is a deep tissue massage in Staunton?

At Healing Touch Body Work on Greenville Avenue, a 60-minute deep tissue session is $95 and a 90-minute is $138, with 2-hour and 3-hour sessions available and heated stones included from 2 hours. All listed prices reflect card payment rates. Save approximately 5% when paying with cash. Gratuity is optional.

What is the difference between deep tissue and Swedish massage?

Depth and coverage. Swedish uses long flowing strokes at light to moderate pressure across the whole body and is built to be calming. Deep tissue is slower and firmer and spends most of the hour on one or two areas. If you are unsure, book a custom massage and decide with your therapist in the first five minutes.

Should I book 60 or 90 minutes?

Sixty minutes if one area is the problem. Ninety if there are two, or if you want the focused work and a full-body pass in the same visit. Most people who come back for a second deep tissue session book the 90.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Sometimes, for a day, the way you are sore after a good workout. Drink water and move normally. If you have something the next day where you need to be at your best, book the session two days ahead.

Can I add cupping to a deep tissue session?

Yes. Cupping attaches to any massage as an add-on and is often booked alongside deep tissue on the upper back. It leaves round marks that fade over a few days, so mention any upcoming event and we will keep the cups off anywhere that will show.

Do I need to book ahead?

Appointments are recommended and Saturdays fill first. You can book online through Square at any hour, or call or text (540) 290-3383 during studio opening hours. The studio is closed Sunday.

Is there anyone who should not book deep tissue?

Check with your doctor first if you have a history of blood clots, have had a stroke, heart surgery or major surgery recently, are in active cancer treatment, have severe neuropathy or uncontrolled diabetes, or take blood-thinning medication. Once you have their go-ahead we are glad to work with you and will adapt the session.
